The last day needs an access checklist

When someone leaves a small team, returning the laptop is only one part of the handover. Their account may still own a shared folder, run an integration, or receive the password reset for an important service.

Before the departure, identify the systems they use and transfer needed ownership through each provider’s supported process. Preserve business records according to your retention obligations. Name the person taking over recurring work. Avoid copying everything into a personal account just to make the handover quick.

At the agreed departure time, disable access, revoke active sessions and tokens where supported, and remove shared links or group memberships that are no longer needed. Rotate any shared credentials the person knew. Coordinate with your IT provider and follow employment and records policies.

Check the list again afterward. Can the remaining team still reach the files and services it needs? Can the former account still sign in anywhere? Offboarding is complete when the access is closed and the work has a new owner, not when the desk is empty.
