A familiar voice still needs a callback
A caller sounds like someone you love and says there is an emergency. They need money now, and they need you to keep it quiet. The voice alone is not enough to establish who is speaking. Scammers can use AI to imitate a person’s voice.
Agree on a callback habit before anything happens. End the call and contact the person through a number you already know. If you cannot reach them, try another trusted person who can help confirm the situation. Do not use contact details supplied by the caller as your only check.
A family phrase can be an extra signal, but do not treat one answer as absolute proof. Personal details can be learned, and a convincing story can still be false. Pressure to send money immediately or avoid speaking to anyone else deserves a pause.
Talk through this with older relatives and teenagers alike. Verification is not being unkind in an emergency. It is a family agreement that everyone can use when fear makes clear thinking difficult.
