Aim the camera at the job

A camera pointed at the front walk has a clear purpose. A camera that also records a neighbor’s window or the family’s private rooms may be collecting more than that purpose requires. Review the frame, not just whether the feed works.

Stand where people normally enter, leave, and spend time. Look at what the camera captures in daylight and after dark. Adjust its position to cover the area you need. If the model offers privacy masking, check the manufacturer’s description and confirm that the mask applies to saved recordings as well as the live view.

Review audio recording separately. Turn it off if you do not need it, and check the rules that apply where you live before recording conversations. Tell household members and regular visitors where cameras are used.

Choose a retention period that serves the camera’s purpose, then review who can view or download clips. Better coverage is not the same as collecting the largest possible picture of everyone’s life.
